Darkness Upon the Land

The evil that has descended upon our nation is largely my generation’s fault

My generation had a lot of spiritual capital handed down by our parents, but we spent it without replenishing it. We lived on a previous generation’s deposit of morality and spiritual heritage, but we failed to acknowledge the source of that, and establish our own relationship with God, and in turn, pass it on to the next generation.

We just assumed that everyone else knew what we knew, but we were wrong, and we’re now seeing the fruits of this error in our city streets. My generation raised our children without a spiritual foundation, believing that our children should be seen as “friends”, and setting aside spiritual foundations and discipline as nothing but “old school” and the “fifties baggage” belonging to our own parents’ generation.

Many of us wanted to free ourselves from the bonds of morality and from the Law of God. Now we are witnessing the fruit of our arrogance. The late Orthodox theologian, Father Thomas Hopko, said “hell is getting to do what you want to do all the time”. My generation created a foundation for our children that, in turn, led to them being ill equipped to pass down to their own children that which would, in turn, be a strong foundation for their lives.

My generation thus failed not only our children, but are now responsible for the ills of this new generation. We can therefore hardly look down with contempt upon the young people who are, although motivated by a good cause (ending racism), burning and looting our cities, and forgetting the just cause that began with their desire to bring about justice for our black brothers and sisters.

That which began with the unjust and cruel death of a black man, has now degenerated into uprisings inspired by Marxist ideologies that are dragging our nation into darkness, and the only leader for this “cause”, is the devil himself. We can spend a lot of time blaming this generation for their lack of spiritual awareness, but what are we going to do about it, and how are we going to help them?

Saint Seraphim of Sarov greeted everyone who came to see him with the words, “my joy”. It did not matter if the person was a criminal, or a good person, to the Elder Seraphim, they were all his joy, and all worthy of his love. He saw the good in everyone. They were “my joy”, even if they were a murderer or a revolutionary.

Everyone is charged by the Lord Jesus Christ to love those shouting their hatred in their face. We must love everyone, no matter what their political persuasion or intensity, their race, their religious beliefs or lack thereof. We are bound to love our enemies, in whatever capacity that might manifest itself, just as I am bound by this same Lord Jesus Christ to love even those who have threatened my life.

With love in Christ,
Abbot Tryphon

The Scripture Readings

Luke 1:39-49

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

The Song of Mary

46 And Mary said:

“My soul [b]magnifies the Lord,
47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
49 For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
And holy is His name.

Luke 1:56

56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

Romans 12:1-3

Living Sacrifices to God

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Serve God with Spiritual Gifts

3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

Matthew 10:37-11:1

37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

A Cup of Cold Water

40 “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus

11 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.

  1. It would be a miracle and gift from God if we could return to the Old World Order – the Order that keeps God IN IT.

    Blessings and peace….

  2. Well said, Abbot. May God have mercy!
(So sad what is happening to Portland; a previously walkable and pleasant downtown core. Let’s also pray for the business owners there whose lives are being ruined.)

  3. Thank you Father for giving us balanced spiritual guidance that is so badly needed by the faithful. It seems we are in a mass bewitching of the spirit of the antichrist.

  4. Fr. Tryphon, it is rather disappointing to see the direction your blog has gone towards. Your posts were usually a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other hyperdox online, but apparently that’s not the case anymore. An Orthodox Christian, of all people, should not be proclaiming that removing racist Confederate statues championed by southern protestants is somehow a “Marxist” plot to destroy society. Did we forgot that our fellow Orthodox who came before us, such as those who immigrated from countries in Eastern Europe, also faced similar discrimination at the hands of WASPs? Is this how the Orthodox Church today addresses racism and inequality? Burying its head in the sand and attaching itself to right-wing conspiracy theories? I can only imagine similar comments made by Orthodox Christians about the civil rights movement in the 60s.

I understand that I’m in the minority and that many American EO want the church to be an extension of Trump and the GOP and to accept alt-right politics as gospel. That, however, is not a path I can follow. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised considering that the Church in Greece is very welcoming to the neo-nazi Golden Dawn party.

    1. Robert,

An elk of all things, the emancipation, Mary, and Christ. These are just some statues that have been burned, defaced, or removed. This isn’t about “racist confederate statues” anymore. And yes, you could say they are just statues or isolated incidents; however, some see a disturbing pattern from history and fear it could be repeating itself.

      Yours kindly,

  5. Father Tryphon,

Thank you so much for your blog, it truly is a blessing.

ANTIFA and the BLM movement as you said, was surely orchestrated by the devil.
I don’t believe in the originators of the movements sincerety for racial equity. Even though they have stirred up many young gullible followers. It’s seems that they are really planted to distract people from what’s really going on. Besides the economy going into a free fall, there seems to be nefarious and tyrannical plans for this country.

On May 1,2020 a bill was introduced into the House of Representatives. The bill is Titled H.R. 6666.

There seems to be a lot of evidence showing we are living in the times of the Book of Revelations.

After looking into it. You will likely want to warn others.

May God Bless and keep you and the whole Monastery safe and cared for. Please pray for me, my family and the whole world. That God places his hands on us and we turn towards him. May God have mercy on us.

  6. Very well said Father. I am totally ashamed of my own generation. The forgetfulness about just what Marxism produced in Orthodox and Catholic homelands in the twentieth century is breathtaking. I might add that people on both sides (to the extent one can actually speak of it in that way) will, to various degrees, not see the humanity of those with whom they disagree. (“Epithet mode” is the only way of expression for some, one notes). Instead, ideology (and not race or class) is front and center. Marxism, Nazism etc., dehumanizes people into groups, reducing human beings to mere groups of problems needing solved by increasingly inhumane solutions. No effort is made to understand other aspirations.

  7. The current “protests”, really riots, have nothing to do with race. It is sad that so many are deceived. Those people who defend radical far left extremists and their violence by claiming they are doing good and fighting “racism” are either blinded by their bias or dishonest. It is not “alt-right” conspiracy to call out this hateful violence, it is simply to state reality. We as Christians should call out and oppose violence and hate no matter where it’s coming from. Pray for peace.

  8. Thank you for speaking on this. I have thought many times about the spiritual inheritance that the older generations received but did not preserve. How sad that we so quickly forget the evil and persecution that our ancestors and fellow Christians suffered under and fought against.
The last few generations have been under assault from the effects of pop culture and miseducation, largely via technology; something they were not prepared to defend against. Music, movies, and other media which glorified sin normalized sin as acceptable human behavior in the culture. And now it is much worse; the assaults more cunning as well as graphic; the access more steady and addictive ( personal phones) and the age of being exposed to demoralizing content is much lower. People do not know what to stand for anymore, which is a horribly chaotic way to live and brings us to the violence and rage of movements like BLM and other social justice takeovers.
We desperately need the church as a beacon, and always the mercy and love of Christ.

  9. Even the British Royal have jumped on the blm protests calling us all out for white privilege. That this woke ideology has been actively embraced by the establishment is telling. Race is a useful tool for the ruling elite because it divides people. The 33 strategies of war. Divide and Conquer strategy 17. Sowing dissension and division from within.
