The Work of the Church

To prepare us for the vision of Christ in glory

The work of the Church is to prepare its members to see God, not as an angry judge prepared to burn those who disobey His commandments, but to experience Him as a loving Father, prepared to join us to Himself in loving embrace, for all eternity.

The Church centers on how each one of us will see God, not on whether we will see God. Seeing God for all eternity is not about will we see God, but rather, will we see God as revealed either as light or as consuming fire. We will all see God at the Second Coming of Christ, but we must be prepared so that we see God not as fire but as light.

It is not the Church that will send anyone to Paradise or to Hell, but it is the Church that prepares us for the vision of Christ in glory, which everyone will have. This is because God loves the damned as much as the Saints. Christ wants all of us to be cured, but not all will accept the cure that He offers.

It is the teaching of the Early Church Fathers that Paradise and Hell do not exist from the point of view of God, but from the point of view of we humans. God will love everyone equally, because He sends His grace to all in the same way. He “makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Saint Matthew 5:45). But not everyone will accept God’s grace in the same way. Some will see God as Light, and others will experience Him as fire.

Jesus the True Shepherd

10 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

Ephesians 1:7-17

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom

15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

Luke 4:22-30

22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum,do also here in Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

The Very. Rev. Abbot Tryphon All-Merciful Saviour Monastery on Vashon Island, Washington. The Monastery is under the omophore of The Most Rev. Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America, of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Situated in the heart of a beautiful forest, surrounded by the Salish Sea, the monastery is reached by ferry from either Seattle, or Tacoma, Washington.

  1. Yes, our Lord “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”(2St. Peter 3:9). Yet unfortunately , not all will not serve Him.

    “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.” – Hebrews 12:28,29.

  2. (Lucifer was cast out of Heaven because of his pride and not being willing to serve)

    Our relationship with God is a very personal one. Unfortunately at times, we think everyone should be like us and while we might be on the same path, we certainly are not identical nor need to be identical.
